At the Speculative Salon we often discuss fantasy art, so I’m
going to, once again, reveal some of the steps taken in creating the latest
cover art for my Enchanted Bookstore Legends. Like before, I started with a
watercolor image of the heroine, but this time I spent much more time on

The background began as a photograph.
After alteration with filters it became this.
The figure began with a very simple watercolor. I spent far more time on the line drawing, to get the action pose correct.
This was scanned, lifted from the background watercolor
paper, and edges were adjusted and smoothed.
Then, hours of digital painting and playing with shadows were spent to get the look I wanted, one that would complement that of the first book, Seeking a Scribe.

Timely...as I'm preoccupied with the process right now myself...but mine is easier since it isn't fantasy. But picking the right image...even the color for the background...turns me into a sniveling heap.

Mac, I can empathize. My eyesight goes wonky I work on Photoshop so long, deliberating over little things. IMO fantasy looks better with artwork rather than stock images, so the challenges are different but still as tedious. Good luck to you with your cover!
I am so glad that you post these. Makes me feel less weird when I work on learning how to use the tools. Just now, investigating Sketchup and Bryce to build a walk-through setting.

Glad you liked the post. I seldom see people post stages of cover art development. I think it's fun to see the progression.
